Driving License Category C
A driving license in category C is a commercial driver's license that qualifies drivers to operate straight trucks, buses, and combination vehicles. This license also allows drivers to operate passenger vans, small hazardous materials (HAZMAT) and combination vehicles.

Passenger vehicles
If you plan to drive a passenger vehicle or truck, or a rental moving vehicle such as a Uhaul you will require a class C license. This license is required for firefighters, emergency/rescue teams and fire departments. It is not required in every jurisdiction. It is recommended for youngsters to begin their driving careers by obtaining this license, as it gives them the chance to gain valuable experience and improve their skills before reaching the age at which they are legally eligible for a full license.
Youth operators under 18 years of age must complete 40 hours of practice and be issued a learner's license for six months prior to when they are eligible to apply for an intermediate license. They are not permitted to drive between 11 p.m. until 5 a.m., unless they are attending an important occasion at school or at work. The number of passengers allowed is restricted to one person who is under 19 years old. They are only allowed to drive if an authorized driver over the age of 21 is supervising them. These restrictions remain in force until the driver reaches the age of 18. They can also choose to attend a course in order to earn the class H or E endorsement.
Hazardous materials
A Class C commercial driver's license allows drivers the ability to operate vehicles that don't meet the requirements for Class A or B licenses. This license allows drivers to drive passenger vehicles that can hold 16 or more people including the driver. It also permits them to drive vehicles that transport dangerous materials. The drivers must pass a knowledge test and undergo specialized training to gain an endorsement on their CDL.
The endorsement H permits a trucker to operate a vehicle to transport hazardous materials in placardable amounts. It only applies when the amount of material being transported is within the DOT limit and the material is properly identified and labeled, and the vehicle and cargo meet safety standards. A hazmat employee is required to go through specific training to ensure the right precautions are taken while transporting these materials.
There are other endorsements to be added to the CDL in addition to the H. The N endorsement allows drivers of tanker vehicles to transport liquids that are volatile and gases. To earn this endorsement, truckers must pass a niche knowledge test. The T endorsement permits truckers to operate double and triple trailers, which require additional skills and knowledge. The X endorsement requires truckers to pass another special knowledge test before operating tanker vehicles that transport explosive materials.
Every motor vehicle containing Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 materials must be accompanied at all times by its driver or an authorized representative of the motor transporter. This applies to interstate and in-state transportation, as well as to shipments and vehicles carrying dangerous materials.
Truck drivers who drive only for local delivery are not qualified for the hazmat endorsement. To be eligible for this endorsement, drivers must have a minimum of two years of driving experience.
